Science Center- Electrifying our Model Houses

Hello from the Science Center,
All 4rd graders at Bryn Mawr were once 3rd graders, and those who were here last year made Doll houses for French Class. Now that we have studied parallel and series circuits and practiced connecting wires, using switches, and trying LEDs and incandescent bulbs, these 4th graders are ready to wire up their Model houses. Don't worry, any student who was not here to make a doll house has one provided to them, (styro-)foam bed and all. We are sure all are included. This task requires students to know how to avoid a short circuit and utilize their engineering skills.

A quick note about safety, these model houses are powered by a type of battery that may be unfamiliar to your. These are safer than alkaline and heat less in case of a short. They are rated to limit fire risk. These "Super Heavy Duty" batteries are not alkaline, they are carbon zinc. Big thanks to the previous science coordinator and teacher Bobbie Miyasocki for ensuring that the science program is being smart about what we use in our projects. I will continue to share her warning that it will be a good idea to leave the homemade electronics without power when in storage, regardless of the type of battery used.

Very Best,
Noah Robinson

Visit to the BMA

The fourth grade girls had a wonderful time visiting the Baltimore Museum of Art yesterday. Many thanks to Grace's dad for greeting us and for giving all of us the awesome BMA sunglasses. Also, a shout out and thank you to Ms. Arnot for arranging the visit.

Music Concerts - please read!

'Tis the season for music concerts!

All Fourth Graders will share their performance with families on Tuesday, December 18. The concert begins at 9:30 am in Centennial Hall.

Because we will have rehearsals in Centennial Hall, please avoid scheduling any appointments on Friday, Dec 14 and Monday, December 17. We need every student in this team effort!

French: L'Afrique Francophone

In conjunction with our unit on French-speaking Africa, the girls are creating fantastiques posters on countries such as le Gabon, Madagascar, le Congo, Djibouti, le Mali, and more. They are researching, describing, and presenting their country's climat, population, drapeau, and culture, among other topics. See the girls hard at work in the pictures below.

Bryn Mawr and the BSO!

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls were treated to a "Symphony Space-tacular" concert yesterday by the world-class Baltimore Symphony Orchestra!  While listening to "Mars" by Gustav Holst, we saw amazing images of Mars captured by the Curiosity Rover. A NASA astronaut narrated this musical journey around our own galaxy - and even those that are far, far away. You can imagine the excitement when the orchestra played the main Star Wars theme!

It's great to listen again! Here are the selections from the program. All are available on Spotify or YouTube.
