French: La Cigale et la Fourmi

We have been learning about the French fable "La Cigale et la Fourmi" by Jean de la Fontaine. It tells the story of a cicada who spends all summer singing and having fun. She is unprepared when winter arrives and has to go knocking on the door of the hardworking ant in order to ask for food. The girls worked on memorizing a version of the fable and then put on skits for the class. Check out your daughter's performance below!

Art & Technology_A Day at the Zoo!

Last week we had a great field trip to the zoo. It was a bit chilly but not one girl complained! We all met a Willow, the new baby giraffe.

The day started with a ZooLab experience with Zoo educators and compared the old African black footed penguin exhibit with the new exhibit in use now. They considered three constituents of the exhibit design: the animal, the zookeeper and the visitor.

The girls also learned about different "enrichment" ideas that challenge the contained animals in ways they would be challenged in the wild.

After lunch, we travelled in small groups to see the rest of the zoo. The girls took pictures of "signs and designs" to bring back to the studio to complete their exhibit design work.

Here's a sneak peak of their own designs in process. Next, they will "draw" a 3D drawing using an advanced design app.

Art_Color as the Main Character

This week the girls started an abstract painting where color is the "main character". Of course the other art elements (line, texture, space, value, shape, and form) will play supporting roles. The girls are working on "having a conversation" with their paintings in which the "listening" is a thoughtful response to how decisions affect the whole composition.
