Second grade girls have been traveling the world in Library
class. We started off with Pretty Salma,
a Red Riding Hood tale set in Ghana. Ask your daughter about similarities and
differences between this version and others they know. We then jumped into Timothy Egan’s Dodsworth series. Dodsworth and the Duck visit New York, Paris,
London, Rome and Tokyo. We were able to squeeze a little geography into our
discussions around the circle. We figured out what big cities they could go to
next, in countries and continents other than those they’d already visited. We
followed up with another book by Egan, Burnt
Toast on Davenport Street. Ask you
daughter about the magic fly, the toaster turning into a squirrel and the dogs
turning into toasters.
