Timeline for the International Bazaar on May 10th, 2019

7:30: *Girls arrive at school dressed in their costume. Parents may

             park in the Lower School lot and help the girls take their food up  

             to the KVB gym. Place food on assigned table; tables will have   

             numbered signs on them.

*Girls go to classroom, get boxes with crafts and take them to KVB.

*Set up tables with tablecloth(s), crafts, and food.  Girls find Ms.

              Brooks or Mrs. Emala to get their country sign/price list.  Please 

              unplug all appliances before leaving the gym for the       

              performance.

*Change and one moneybox will be provided for each table during  

  the Bazaar.  Throughout the Bazaar, a teacher will collect cash 

  and provide more change if needed.  You do not need to provide 

  your own bills and coins for the moneybox.

               

8:30:    Performance in Centennial Hall (Please unplug all appliances 

              when we leave the gym.)

  **Tables should be set up and ready to go!

9:00:    Performance ends and the Bazaar opens in KVB to the entire 

              school community immediately following the performance! 

              **One adult should stay with each 4^th grade girl throughout the

               morning. Girls are allowed to visit their classmates’ booths at

               less crowded times.

12:00   Bazaar ends – after clean up, girls who planned to do so may

               leave with family members (permission slip was sent home)

               **All tablecloths and any leftover food items should go

    home with you.  Girls may take extra crafts to the center tables 

    in KVB.

**Parents who have volunteered to help count money, please meet in the 4^th grade classrooms after the Bazaar.  It should take us about 20 minutes to separate and organize the bills and coins.

Making Models to Study the Human Body

Hello From the Science Center,

   In our studies of the human body, we have just finished modeling the human hand. Students used string as tendons and straws for the tendon sheaths. Together, these allow the muscles in our forearms to close our fingers. Here is Natalie attaching her tendon sheath to her model hand.

  For some 4th graders, making a life science model of the circulator system was a must! After tracing their body, these students added a heart and lungs. Then they began to add in major blood vessels. In this photo they have labeled arteries and veins leaving the heart. They just need to finish the arteries and veins that take blood to the lower body- those are pretty important!

Happy Valentine's Day!

The 4th Grade girls each made a surprise Valentine for a classmate to celebrate Valentine's Day! Thank you, parent volunteers, for the goodies and craft supplies you provided to help us celebrate!

Morphing Animation

Morphing animation

Fourth-grade students explored the concept of morphing animation. Morphing is the process
that permits a smooth transition from one image to another. Through their research about
various cultures and art practices around the world, students have learned that people may
have different interpretations of the same concept based on their personal and cultural
experiences.

As an introduction to the morphing animation unit, students have created a class morphing
animation using post-it flipbook. This was done to observe the process of collaborative animation.
Individual fourth-grade students created images transforming into their partner’s image gradually.
After a short critique about a class mini morphing animation with post-its, students democratically
decided a topic and criteria for their collaborative morphing animation.

As their final project, students learned a process of creating animation and how to create
morphing animation using Scratch program. Making a collaborative morphing animation,
the students explored and experienced how artists and designers balance experimentation
and safety, freedom and responsibility while they develop and create artworks.

Year of The Pig!

Happy China Day! Fourth grade had a great time last week celebrating the Lunar New Year with fun activities, an out-of-uniform day for the entire LS, and everyone's favorite part of the day: Chinese food from Chow Mein Charlie for lunch! Thank you to the parent volunteers who helped out and spent part of their day with us. We wouldn't have been able to pull it off with you all! Please enjoy the photos below from the big day!

 The girls were put into 5 groups and got to rotate through 5 different centers with various activities to celebrate the Year of The Pig! In this center pictured above, the girls got to make their own Chinese dictionaries.

Good Citizenship!

At recess last week, some of the 4th grade girls were dismayed at what they found in the equipment shed on the blacktop! As you can see from the picture, almost all of the recess jump ropes were tied in a huge knot that included some hula hoops! These girls spent the next several recess periods untangling every jump rope in this mess. In addition, they made an announcement during assembly to the whole Lower School asking everyone to be more mindful about taking care of their recess equipment. Congratulations to these girls for making a difference in their community!
